Union Budget 2013-14 has been popularly received as a women-centric budget. However, to assess the extent to which this budget addresses gender concerns, there is a need to scrutinise whether some fundamental concerns regarding the responsiveness of budgets towards women have been met. This paper carries an analysis of the Gender Budget Statement presented in the Union Budget 2013-14 to determine how robust and comprehensive it is. In the context of an alarming rise in gender based violence, the paper also examines the Union Government’s interventions to address such violence.
