Global Minimum Corporate Tax: Looking Beyond the Surface 30 July, 2021

Recent talks focusing on a global minimum corporate tax proposal that could form the basis of a worldwide deal have drawn a lot of attention. The agreement has found support from over 130 countries, including the G20 countries as well as large developing countries like China and India. However, in a complex and diverse world reeling from the pandemic, the tax deal may have diverse implications for different countries, along with issues around fairness of the process of setting 'global' norms. How would this work, what repercussions would a final agreement have for developing countries, and the significance of the specific timing of this deal? A number of such questions need to be unpacked.

In such a context, CBGA had organised a webinar which brought together leading economists, policy experts, civil society leaders and tax equity advocates from different countries to discuss the tax deal, especially from the perspective of the southern countries.
